Predominantly inspiratory wheeze due to large airway obstruction
Aetiology
- In children - most commonly infections (croup, epiglottitis), or a foreign body obstructing airway
- In adults - most commonly due to tumours
- Other causes include anaphylaxis and trauma
Investigations
- Laryngoscopy (be careful if suspected acute epiglottitis)
- Bronchoscopy
- Flow volume loop (spirometry)
- CXR
- Other imaging e.g. CT, thyroid scan
Management
- Treat underlying cause
- O2
- Emergency - cricothyroidotomy/tracheostomy
