Pre-Cancerous Cellular Changes in Cervical Cancer

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia

  • Pre-invasive stage of cervical cancer
  • Dysplasia of squamous cells which occurs at the transformation zone
  • Detectable by cervical screening

Cervical glandular intraepithelial neoplasia (CGIN)

  • Origin from endocervical epithelium
  • Pre-invasive phase of endocervical adenocarcinoma
  • More difficult to diagnose on cervical smear than CIN, screening less effective
