Emerging sexually transmitted pathogen
Aetiology
- There are concerns it has the potential to become a 'superbug' due to high levels of macrolide resistance
Clinical presentation
- The presentation is very similar to chlamydia, and patients may be infected with both organisms
- Urethritis is a key feature
Investigations
- NAAT
- First urine sample in the morning for men
- Vaginal swabs (can be self-taken) for women
Management
- Doxycycline 100 mg BD for seven days; or
- Azithromycin 1 g as a single dose, then 500 mg daily for two more days
