Mycoplasma Genitalium

Emerging sexually transmitted pathogen

Aetiology

  • There are concerns it has the potential to become a 'superbug' due to high levels of macrolide resistance

Clinical presentation

  • The presentation is very similar to chlamydia, and patients may be infected with both organisms
  • Urethritis is a key feature

Investigations

  • NAAT
    • First urine sample in the morning for men
    • Vaginal swabs (can be self-taken) for women

Management

  • Doxycycline 100 mg BD for seven days; or
  • Azithromycin 1 g as a single dose, then 500 mg daily for two more days
