Patellar Fracture

Aetiology

  • Traumatic injury - direct trauma or rapid contracture of the quadriceps with a flexed knee

Clinical presentation

Symptoms

  • Severe pain in/around kneecap

Signs

  • Palpable patellar defect
  • Significant haemarthrosis
  • Unable to preform straight leg raise

Investigations

  • X-ray - AP and lateral

Management

  • Conservative - knee immobilised in extension, full weight bearing
  • Operative - ORIF, partial/total patellectomy
