Aetiology
- Traumatic injury - direct trauma or rapid contracture of the quadriceps with a flexed knee
Clinical presentation
Symptoms
- Severe pain in/around kneecap
Signs
- Palpable patellar defect
- Significant haemarthrosis
- Unable to preform straight leg raise
Investigations
- X-ray - AP and lateral
Management
- Conservative - knee immobilised in extension, full weight bearing
- Operative - ORIF, partial/total patellectomy
