Vestibular Neuritis and Labrynthitis

Labyrinthitis: inflammation of the labyrinth
Vestibular neuritis: inflammation of the vestibular nerve

Aetiology

  • Probably viral

Clinical presentation

  • First attack severe, lasting hours with N+V
  • Prolonged vertigo (days)
  • Labyrinthitis is associated with tinnitus or hearing loss (not seen in vestibular neuritis)
  • May be viral symptoms e.g. malaise, headache, N+V

Management

  • Supportive management with vestibular sedatives
  • Generally self-limiting
  • May require further investigation if prolonged or atypical
  • May be helped by rehabilitation exercises if prolonged
